*[12]* What man is he that fears the LORD? Him shall He teach in the way that he shall choose.
*[13]* His soul shall dwell at ease, and his seed shall inherit the earth.
*[14]* The secret of the LORD is with them that fear Him, and He will show them His covenant.
The Hebrew word for “fears” is “yare,” which means morally reverent. Morally reverent people are those who listen to their conscience, God’s word, and the spirit of God.
There are many things not specifically addressed in the Bible due to the changes of time and era. For example, while the Bible prohibits worshiping idols, people today may not worship physical idols, but they often idolize their cell phones, social media platforms like Facebook and TikTok, and spend excessive amounts of time engaging with them. These mediums are not found in the Bible.
Consider this: if you are watching a cricket match on your phone for six hours or gaming for five hours, Satan might tempt you into thinking you’re a good person since you’re not watching inappropriate content. However, if you are morally reverent, your conscience will remind you that this obsession is becoming an idol. It’s important to re-evaluate and limit that screen time, perhaps to just 30 minutes.
In the time of Joseph, the Bible and laws were not yet established; they came later with Moses. Yet, Joseph nonetheless knew in his heart that committing adultery with his master’s wife was a great abomination in the sight of the Lord.
A morally reverent person inherently understands that they should not lie, cheat, steal, gossip, or disrespect parents and elders. They strive to live in a way that brings them closer to God. They focus on correcting even the smallest mistakes and flaws in their lives, aiming for moral perfection. While they are capable of making mistakes, they are mindful of their words. If they slip up, they seek forgiveness and endeavor to live consciously to please God in every aspect of their lives.
The morally reverent person desires to reach God’s heart by not causing Him hurt or displeasure. They strive not to sin, even in their thoughts and dreams. Like Peter the apostle was asked to eat reptiles and snakes in his dream, he refused to eat, although the dream meant differently.Acts 10 :9-15
Becoming morally reverent is not a one-time event but an ongoing process in a believer’s life. Those who engage in this continuous endeavor will receive guidance, teaching, and instruction from God in the ways He has chosen for them.
In Hebrew, the word “choose” means to select something excellent. Thus, a morally reverent person is divinely guided in the paths God has chosen for their excellence. As a result, their soul will be at ease, which is something every human desires.
*[14]* The secret of the LORD is with those who fear Him, and He will show them His covenant. According to this psalm, a morally reverent person is in a close relationship with God, similar to a close friendship where one spends quality time daily. This individual receives insights and revelations from God’s innermost heart—this is the person to whom God reveals His covenant.
In the Hebrew Bible, “covenant” means “to cut” or “agreement.” In the Old Testament, agreements were often symbolized by the shedding of an animal’s blood to seal the agreement. Some covenants are made by people to God, while others are made by God to people. For example, Hannah made a vow to the Lord, stating that if He gave her a son, she would dedicate him to His service for life, ensuring no razor would touch his head (1 Samuel 1:13).
In Genesis chapter 26, during a famine, Isaac was tempted to flee to Egypt. However, God instructed him to remain in Gerar and promised to bless him there. Isaac obeyed the Lord and stayed in that land.
*[12]* Then Isaac sowed seed in that land and received in the same year a hundredfold blessing from the Lord.
The morally reverent person is in a two-sided relational covenant with God, which requires costly obedience but also promises abundant blessings in return.
