It is evident in the Bible that God did not hide the mistakes of His people. These accounts are clearly documented so that we can apply the lessons learned to our physical and spiritual lives.

The Bible teaches in Proverbs 29:17: “Correct your son, and he will give you rest; yes, he will give delight to your heart.” Many spiritual leaders in the Bible, who walked according to God’s heart, made considerable mistakes in relation to their children. For example, when God chose Solomon to be the heir to King David and the next king of Israel, David’s elder son, Adonijah, took the opportunity to declare himself king. This was partly because David was old and did not address Adonijah’s behavior; as he never confronted him about his actions, as noted in 1 Kings 1:6: “David his father had never in his life displeased him by asking, ‘Why have you done so?'”

This indicates that David failed to correct or discipline Adonijah, which gave him the boldness to act as he did. This lack of discipline fostered animosity between the two brothers. Eventually, Solomon became king, but due to Adonijah’s foolish request, Solomon ordered his execution.

If David had chosen to discipline Adonijah, the events of 1 Kings chapters 1 and 2 might have unfolded quite differently.

In Genesis 34:1, we read: “Now Dinah, daughter of Leah, whom she bore to Jacob, went out [unattended] to see the girls of the place.” The term “unattended” indicates that she was not being watched, cared for, or supervised. As a result, she ventured out alone and caught the attention of the prince of that land, who ultimately disgraced her.

This situation might have occurred because she was not as well cared for as her brothers were. Additionally, it seems that Jacob and Leah did not spend enough time engaging with their daughter. The disgrace did not just affect Dinah; it brought shame to the entire family and occurred because she was unattended. Jacob may not have developed the habit of asking Dinah about her friends or where she was going, nor did he correct her when she went wrong.

Sometimes, children who lack personal attachment to their parents may seek connections outside the home, which can lead to harm. As a consequence of this incident, Dinah’s brothers ended up killing the prince and his people, which lead Jacob and his entire tribe to leave that region.

While it’s beneficial for parents to grant independence to their children, Western parents should also strive to be their children’s first friends. They need to cultivate a culture of guidance, monitoring their kids to help them discern right from wrong. It’s important not to become overly spiritual to the point of neglecting family responsibilities. God grants us wisdom through Christ, reminding us that we must take care of our spiritual lives, physical well-being, and family relationships. No one cares for you more than your mother, father, or immediate family.
