This story is found in Genesis 4:16 and represents the first offering made by humans recorded in the biblical accounts. Before this event, there was no law regarding tithing, thanksgiving, or offerings ordained by God, the supreme authority of the world. God did not require anything from Adam or his sons. However, when they presented their offerings, one was accepted, and the other was rejected.
As a father, you would gladly accept any gift from your children, regardless of its value. However, the Father in Heaven is not impressed by expensive gifts, nor does He overlook those that are inexpensive. In the New Testament, we see that Jesus valued the widow’s offering, which amounted to only two mites. What does this signify?
Abel’s offering consisted of two parts: he gave the firstborn of his sheep and goats along with their fat, while Cain’s offering was only the fruits of the earth.
For example, if you were to buy a dress for a not-so-close friend, you might choose any dress. However, if it were for your brother’s birthday or a close friend, you would go to the market, and certainly choose something special and attractive. This effort reflects how Abel approached his offering.
Abel’s offering also fulfilled a future prophecy by offering the firstling of animals. When the Israelites were freed from slavery in Egypt, God spared the firstborn of the Israelites while the Egyptians faced great loss. Later, God instructed that the firstborn animals be sacrificed instead of the firstborn Israelite children. (Numbers 8:17).
The Bible states that by faith, Abel offered to God a more excellent sacrifice than Cain (Hebrews 11:4). Some supernatural revelation entered Abel’s heart, which we refer to as faith. This revelation came from his genuine thirst for God. His desire was to please God, and he may have approached his father, Adam, to inquire about what God preferred most or what He liked best. Therefore, faith means receiving supernatural revelation through a deep longing to connect with God’s heart.
You might decide to purchase a red curtain for the church as an offering, but God might prefer that you buy a golden one. The moral of the story is that whatever you do for God, ensure that it truly reaches and pleases His heart.
