The power of a name in the Bible signifies that your calling is beautifully concealed within it.

2020 I received a unique and significant revelation from the Holy Spirit. Despite my prayers, fasting, and Bible reading, I was still facing attacks from the devil. I felt dejected and devastated by these ongoing challenges. At that time, I was just a regular church member, not a pastor. The Holy Spirit urged me to check the meaning of my name, and I discovered that it meant “light.” The Holy Spirit then revealed that the devil was fighting against my calling, which was hidden within my name. The devil wanted to keep me in darkness, while God intended for me to be a light for others. I was encouraged to cooperate with the Holy Spirit in resisting the devil, as promised in James 4:7-8, which states that if we resist the devil, he will flee from us.

The Bible says in Psalm 104:4 that God makes His ministers flames of fire. When there is darkness in a room, the flames of fire quickly bring light. Today, Jesus Christ has made me a flame of God’s fire as a pastor, helping to remove darkness from people’s lives.

*Biblical Examples*

Consider the example of Mary, whom the angel told would be conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit and bear a son named Jesus, who means “deliverer.” Or “savior” This was a prophecy regarding Jesus’ calling as the deliverer, destined to free His people from sin, evil spirits, deadly diseases, and the devil (Matthew 1:21)

Another example is Elijah, who appeared during the reign of King Ahab when the nation had turned from the true God to idol worship. Outraged, Elijah announced a drought as punishment for the Israelites after three years. God sent him to confront the prophets of Baal, preparing a sacrifice and challenging the people: “How long will you hesitate between two opinions? If the Lord is God, follow Him; but if Baal is God, follow him.” The God who sent fire from heaven was the true God (1 Kings 18:29). Elijah’s name means “Yahweh is God,” and when God sent fire from heaven, the people exclaimed that the Lord (Yahweh) is indeed God.
Here, we see how Elijah’s name aligns with his calling.

*Names Changed by God Himself*

Many individuals in the Bible had their names changed by God. For instance, God changed Abram’s name to Abraham, meaning “father of a multitude” (Genesis 17:5). He also changed Sarai’s name to Sarah, which means “princess.” These changes were prophetic; every time Sarah called Abraham’s name, she declared him the father of nations, bringing him closer to the promised child. This reflects God’s ability to call into existence things that do not yet exist, as mentioned in Romans 4:17.

Additionally, God changed Jacob’s name from “deceiver” to Israel, meaning “God prevails” (Genesis 32:28).
Jesus also changed one of His disciples’ names from Simon to Peter, meaning “rock” in Greek, signifying Peter’s future role as a church leader after Jesus’ ascension (Matthew 16:18).

God changed Saul’s name to Paul, meaning “little.” As Paul the Apostle began his ministry, he was tasked with suffering many things for Jesus. The name “Saul,” which means “asked,” could have influenced his life, making him prone to questioning, so Jesus gave him a name that meant (little) signifies humility.

A name’s meaning can profoundly affect your spiritual and physical life.
If someone has a name that signifies poverty, it may hinder their ability to achieve wealth. In such cases, it may be wise to change the name, accompanied by prayer and counsel from a pastor

Conversely, if a name means victory but the individual has not experienced triumph, there is a contradiction. For instance, a person named Emmanuel—meaning “God is with us”—who breaks biblical laws through actions like drinking alcohol, stealing, and lying cannot truly embody the essence of that name. How can they claim that God is with them when they are not living according to His word?

In summary, the meaning of your name affects your life and can hinder your calling. Ensuring that your name has a positive meaning that aligns with God’s purpose for you is crucial.
